Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year in Chorley with so much to check out that you’ll never want the celebrations and Christmas cheer to end. There’s everything from festive market stalls to traditional lights switch on events to street entertainment, lots of independent shops for unique Christmas presents, cheeky elves, Christmas crafts and not forgetting numerous opportunities to meet the main man – Father Christmas!
Chorley's Real Ice Rink
Get your skates on this Christmas and glide, pirouette and whirl across Chorley’s Real Ice Rink when it returns to the town. The Real Ice Rink provides a fantastic opportunity to get together with family and friends and experience the thrill of skating on real ice. There will be some fantastic themed skating days and school skating slots, and there will also be the Cub Club skate sessions for the under 5s.
The popular attraction will this year be situated on St Thomas’ Square behind the Town Hall and easily assessed from Queens Road and Farrington Street car parks.
Chorley’s Winter Wonderland will be open every day from Saturday 7 December until Sunday 5 January 2020, except Christmas Day. The ice rink is just £6 per skate session with payment on entry. Ice skates and other equipment provided.
Cub Club will run Sunday to Friday and is for skaters 5 and under and is £3 per skater and all child skaters must be accompanied by an adult skater who will be £3. Please note there is limited availability on each Cub Club session.

First hour and last 2 hours of skating sessions each day (not including Cub Club) it is 1 Time Credit per skater, per skate session.
We will also have some festive children’s rides on Fazakerley Street. Opening will be the same as the ice rink above and rides will close 1 hour earlier. All rides are £1.50 per child.

Maximum skate size: Adult size 10.5 (EU45) (some size 11,12 & 13’s are available).
Can everyone visiting the Real Ice Rink please wrap up warm in suitable clothing for ice skating. Wearing gloves is strongly recommended.
The Big Switch On
November 24 will see the family stage show and event get Chorley’s Christmas celebrations well and truly underway and transform Chorley town centre in twinkly winter wonderland with delightful displays lining the streets.
There will be a brilliant festive atmosphere in town with local bands, choirs and singers performing on the stage with some local hero’s making an appearance before the traditional countdown and big switch on. The show will start at 2.30pm with the switch on at 5pm.
Chorley’s Christmas Markets return for the second year bigger and better, on Sunday 24 November, organised by Totally Locally Chorley and supporting Chorley Help the Homeless. The market running from 10am until 6pm around the town centre, will feature a wide range of delicious food and drink, excellent arts and crafts and fantastic gift stalls.
The Totally Locally Elf will be in town joining the main man himself Father Christmas. The day marks the start of the Christmas magic in Chorley town centre, which will also see the traditional Christmas Lights switch on later in the day.
Post your letter to Father Christmas
Don’t forget to write your list and letter to Santa and post it in his very special post box located in the centre of Market Walk from Sunday 24 November.
Chorley Council is bringing Pendle Productions back for another year to perform the extremely popular pantomime, Jack & The Beanstalk, to a family audience from 1:30pm until 3:30pm with doors opening at 1pm on Saturday 7 December. The performance is suitable for children of all ages and will take place in the Lancastrian Suite at Chorley Town Hall. Tickets are priced at £4 per person plus booking fee.
However, there is a limit of up to six tickets per booking. Light refreshments and snacks will be available to purchase at the performance. Parking is free after 1pm every Saturday across all Chorley town centre car parks.
For one night only on Saturday 23 November, Astley Hall will come alive with light, music and mystery as the jewel in Chorley’s crown is transformed. This amazing free event has to be seen as the historic Astley Hall is beautifully lit with magnificent light displays and candles. Come along and see 400 years of history in a different light. From the Tudors to the Stuarts; the Victorians to Edwardians, meet characters from the past as we illuminate Astley Hall and the Walled Garden for this special annual event. The night begins at 5pm and Café Ambio will be open serving delicious food and drink.
Chorley’s Santa Express is back to whisk families on a magical journey from Chorley town centre through Astley Park to meet Father Christmas in the wonderful setting of Astley Hall.
Chorley’s Santa Express will be running between Chorley town centre and Astley Hall every 20 minutes between 9.30am and 3.30pm with tickets still available for Saturday 30 November. The Santa Express will take families to meet Father Christmas as he takes up residence in Astley Hall’s Inlaid Room in the run up to Christmas.
Every child who meets Father Christmas will receive a special Christmas gift and there will be some festive face painting and arts and crafts in Astley Coach House too. Tickets to take a ride on Chorley’s Santa Express to meet Father Christmas at Astley Hall must be purchased in advance and are now SOLD OUT.
